Japanese Language & Japanese Culture Studies Program (JLC)

At Iwate University, the Japanese Language & Japanese Culture Studies Program (JLC) is offered for students from abroad who major in Japan-related fields such as Japanese language and Japanese cultural studies. Students annually recommended by Japanese embassies in every country and students recommended by Iwate University's partner institutions are considered for selection. The course period is for 11 months lasting from October until August of the following year. Participating students are required to write an academic paper on a chosen topic and to make an oral presentation in Japanese.

  • - University Recommendation
  • - Application period: January to February
    Apply through Iwate University's teaching staff. Students who wish to apply should contact teaching staff who represent our partner universities or the International Office (gryugaku@iwate-u.ac.jp).
  • - Nominees chosen: Around March
    Nominees will be selected and chosen within Iwate University and recommended to MEXT
  • - Students accepted: Around June
    Students who have been accepted for the Japanese Language & Japanese Culture Program (JLC) will be informed by Iwate University teaching staff. At the same time, they will also be informed of the procedures for international students, including obtaining a visa.
  • - Arrival in Japan: End of September
    Students arrive in Japan on a date designated by Iwate University.

  • - Embassy Recommendation
    Applications are accepted from December through to February of the following year for international students who will arrive in Japan in October the following year. The first selections will take place at the embassy in your country from the middle of February to March (the selection schedule differs depending on the country). For more information about applying, please inquire at the Japanese embassy in your country.

Teacher-training Program

This program lasts for eighteen months, and it is now offered to teachers from 25 countries. Starting in October, trainees will enroll in a six-month intensive Japanese language training course. Then, from April, trainees will take courses offered at the Faculty of Education relating to their areas of specialization.
