Extracurricular Activities
For a rewarding student life while studying abroad, it is important to participate in extracurricular and/or club
activities in addition to attending regular classes. Iwate University has baseball, soccer and other sports clubs
as well as culture and arts associations that international students can join. (Be aware that some clubs don't
accept non-regular students.)
These activities offer a greater chance to deepen your friendship with Japanese students.
Please inquire at window #8 of the Student Center (Building B, 1F) about extracurricular activities at Iwate
University.
Events for International Students
Garden Party
Every May or June, international students host the annual "Garden Party" at Iwate University and serve typical ethnic dishes from their home countries. This event provides international students with a good opportunity to showcase their home cultures to the local community. Japanese students help international students during this event, providing a chance for everyone to make new friends while developing a greater cross-cultural awareness.
Kimono Workshop
Twice a year, in spring and winter, a Kimono Workshop is held for international students who have never worn kimonos. This event is a good opportunity for them to deepen their understanding of this traditional Japanese garment. Students will certainly enjoy wearing kimonos and taking pictures of themselves during this wonderful campus experience.
International Student Field Trip
During summer break, there is a field trip for international students. So far, previous students have traveled to Hokkaido, Miyagi, Fukushima, Sadogashima, and other places. This is a golden opportunity to learn more about Japan.
International Student Skiing Course
International students will want to take the skiing course during winter break. Iwate is so attractive to skiers that the world alpine skiing competition was held here in 1993. This is a good chance to learn how to ski from expert instructors. Beginners are welcome, of course!
Local Activities
There are various international-exchange events held in the local community throughout the year. International
students will have plenty of opportunities to interact not only with friends from the university but also with
the local community.
These activities are beneficial to both international students and the local community in that they help them
deepen their mutual cross-cultural understanding.
